Let’s explore this home room by room to look at how the colors come together in this beautiful whole house color palette. For this home, we went with a Farrow & Ball color palette (with a couple of Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore colors thrown in there too). It was this project that first got me obsessed with Farrow & Ball paints and inspired my recent series of Farrow & Ball paint color reviews. You’re probably not going to buy a new couch to match your paint, but it’s easy enough to make sure your paint coordinates with your existing decor. Look at the colors in your accent pillows, art and other design elements to help you plan your palette. I’m so glad I found this color through testing a bunch of samples because we’ve used it now in three rooms of the house.

I worked with Behr to reveal their Color of the Year in 2020 and the Color Trends palette, which was SO fun. We created a mountain mural with several of the color trends and this was the main color for the wall. It’s much lighter and warmer than the gray color I used throughout our first fixer-upper, Behr Fashion Gray.

But before getting into that, let's get to know some basics about colors that will help you choose the palette or create your palette. If I had to pick one thing that makes a home feel amazing and cohesive it would definitely be color. But for a wall color palette, a dark color like this can be difficult.

When choosing a white color, think about the colors you already have in your home. If your floors are warm and you’re going for a complementary color scheme, then you’ll want to choose a cool, crisp white. Bedrooms are a great place to play with more color in your home. I love using blues, greens and neutral paint colors with colorful undertones when choosing paint colors for bedrooms. Even the best paint colors can look all wrong once they’re actually on the wall. It’s critical to test your paint colors in the spaces you plan to use them and to do your tests in natural light. Creating the perfect whole house color palette goes beyond the actual colors – you need to choose the right sheens for each color too. Paint sheens are critical to the design of a color scheme. The primary bathroom is one of my favorite spaces in this home. This space is painted with Farrow & Ball Teresa’s Green, a beautiful aqua paint color that adds a feeling of calm to the spaces it’s used in.

The colors across from each other on the wheel, like green and purple or blue and orange, are complementary. Start with a warm-toned wall color, a neutral couch, and decor and accessories in a few earthy colors. I love the idea that colors can flow together but each room can still be unique.

How do you want your space to feel?

Just a shade darker than Silver Strand, I love using Magnetic Gray as a paint color for bedrooms, dining rooms, bathrooms, and cozy living rooms. It has a bit more depth to it and looks great with lots of white . This paint color can be dark, so I would make sure you're using it in large rooms or rooms with a lot of natural light. Depending on the exposure and lighting, Magnetic Gray can appear more silvery blue or have green undertones. It's a very interesting neutral paint color that I keep going back to and a personal favorite for master bedrooms.

In reality, you should not paint your entire home one color – not even when trying to paint with neutral paint colors to sell your home. Today I’m going to walk you through a real-life example of a whole house paint color scheme for some lovely empty-nester clients of mine. With the kids officially out of the house, they were ready to update their family home and really make it their own. Now do the same thing with the other side of the color wheel. Pick one of the cool colors that is not your go-to color. Just using the colors from the color wheel, pick a warm color that is not your go-to color. When I first started working with these wonderful clients, they wanted to update their home after living in it for so many years. They love the beach and are lucky enough to have one of the few houses in Denver that actually has a water view.

While grayish-green and white add a smidgen of crispness to the room, black anchors the rest of the elements. Save time.I don’t have time to analyze paint swatches over and over . Having the overall colors expertly matched allows me to commit and actually get to the projects that will bring the whole design to life. That said, creating a “cohesive home” doesn’t mean you have to paint every room the exact same color.
